THE KINGDOM OF GOD

(1 Corinthians 6:9-11)

There are so many places in the Bible where the kingdom of God has been talked about, but I would like our discussion to be based on only this one. This text that we will center our discussion on is in Apostle Paul’s letter to the believers in Corinth. Paul, as we all know, is one the greatest Evangelists; that is to say, he carried the Good News from place to place effectively. This Good News of Christ, which he says in his letter to the believers in Roman 1:16 that he is not ashamed of, is primarily to bring people to the Kingdom of God.

The Kingdom of God is where the almighty God Jehovah reigns and is King. I know you will side with me that it is highly impossible to talk about the Kingdom of God without talking about the Good News of Christ, as the belief of it is symbolic to the key to the Kingdom of Heaven/God. The big questions that emanate whenever the Kingdom of God is discussed are;

  • Who inherits the Kingdom of god?
  • What takes one into the Kingdom of God, or how does one inherit the Kingdom of God?

Reading verse 9 and 10 of 1st Corinthians chapter 6 clearly states emphatically, and with no ambiguity, that those who do wrong will never get access to the Kingdom of God. It did not even end there, it went on to tell the wrongdoings, and they are;

i.            Sexual sin – this includes pornography, masturbation, lust, filthy talk (i.e. profanity), etc.

ii.            Idol worship – to my understanding, it is anything that one does and likes and enjoys so much that they do not mind it taking the time of God from them. This could be hobbies, persons, graven images, addictions etc.

iii.            Adultery and fornication – premarital sex, and extra marital affairs.

iv.            Prostitution – sleeping with someone who is not your partner (male or female) especially for monetary gains.

v.            Stealing – taking what does not belong to you without permission or through unscrupulous means, telling lies

vi.            Greed – envy

vii.            Abusing and cheating people – insults, assaults, bullies, quarrels, etc.

viii.            Drunkenness – intoxicating the blood with foreign chemical like smoking and drinking of dopes.(i.e. taking drugs)

ix.            Homosexualism – gayism and lesbianism.

All the above practices do not lead anyone into the Kingdom of God rather than hell, a place of eternal destruction. From the above, we have realized that those who do right are those who will inherit the Kingdom of God.

HOW DOES ONE INHERIT THE KINGDOM OF GOD

Verse 11 makes us fortunate by making us aware that all hope is not gone, we can inherit the kingdom of God by putting our trust and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Even Apostle Paul was not right with God until he put his faith in Christ and then became His slave.

The one who inherits the Kingdom of God is Holy, clean and right by the Standard of God. God’s holiness, cleanliness and righteousness is attained by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by possessing the spirit of God. Calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ in the Text in NLT is simply having faith in Him.

Let’s assimilate this with this analogy: A ten year old boy (Owen) insulted a fifteen year old boy (Elliot). Elliot who was very offended by the insult chased Owen home to beat him. When Owen entered their house, he saw his two year old brother playing in the hall and bypassed him to wake up his brother, who is ten years old, to come salvage the situation.

Owen did not call his two year old brother because he did not believe he would be able to serve the purpose for which he would have called him. This is a clear demonstration of believing in someone. If we could believe in fellow mortals and call on them, then what is preventing us from accepting this sacrifice that bought us from the devil and call on Christ?

Galatians 5:22 makes us understand the length and breadth of possessing the Holy Spirit. The one that possesses the Holy Spirit has love, peace, joy, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

Summary

The Kingdom of God is inherited by anyone provided;

  1. There is faith in the Lord Jesus Christ
  2. There is manifestation of the presence of the Holy Spirit

Without the above, don’t fool yourself, you cannot inherit the Kingdom of god.
