And the fruit of the Spirit is … self-control. According to john 15:4-5, we are the branches of the vine which is Christ: we can only bear fruits if we are connected to the vine. Likewise, self-control cannot be produced by only self-discipline but by the help of the Holy Spirit, for we can of our own do nothing.
When we bear this fruit, it will save us from the actions that leave us with guilt, shame, and regret. Self-control leads us not into sin. The wrong language, the sexual immorality, the wicked decisions and all other evil desires cannot surface in our lives as long as we bear this fruit. The constant reading of the word, praying fervently, productive fasting and commitment to the things of God is achievable with self-control.
According to the Apostle Paul, “All things are lawful for me but I will not be brought under the power of any.” This, I believe, is the mind-set of the one who upholds self-control. Bible says that the flesh is in constant warring against the Spirit. Therefore, for the Spirit to have an upper hand over the flesh, self-control powered by the Holy Spirit is very essential.
To make a change in life starts with the new mind-set we create. Beloved, let this be your mind-set,
“All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any (NKJV).” – 1 Cor 6:12. Let the Holy Spirit work in you, remain connected to the vine and begin to produce the fruit of self-control. For it will save you from a great deal of regretful mistakes, and bring gladness to your heart as you remain committed to the heart-beat of God and His work.
And do not take credit for it when you constantly and bountifully produced the fruit of self-control. Let it not be your own boasting for you can of your own do nothing. What do we have that we did not receive of the Lord that we should boast? Everyone needs self-control. I show you an excellent way of walking in self-control. Bear in mind that self-control is a fruit of the Spirit. God richly bless you.
